Red Bull's Max Verstappen beat McLaren's Lando Norris to pole position at the United States Grand Prix with championship leader Oscar Piastri down in sixth.

After the McLaren drivers crashed out of the sprint earlier on Saturday, neither was able to challenge Verstappen even though the world champion failed to complete a final run in qualifying.

Verstappen was sent out too late to get around in time to start a last lap before the chequered flag but still beat Norris by 0.291 seconds.

It was an imperious performance that underlined why McLaren are concerned about his threat in the drivers' championship.

Norris saved his best for last in a difficult session to pip Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to second on the grid by just 0.006secs.

But Piastri, who has looked out of sorts all weekend, was not quick and he ended up 0.574secs off the pace, and behind Mercedes' George Russell and the second Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton.

  3. 'Real step forward' - Hamiltonpublished at 23:57 BST 18 October

After qualifying fifth, two places behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton said: "We had a bit of improvement compared to yesterday. The car still wasn't quite right throughout qualifying. I had massive understeer from the beginning so bit by bit I was adding and adding wing.

"Towards the end it got a little bit better but it's almost too late that you get that confidence. To be third and fifth is a real step forward."

  4. Weekend is far from over' - Piastripublished at 23:55 BST 18 October

Championship leader Oscar Piastri, who qualified sixth for Sunday's US Grand Prix, has been chatting to Sky Sports. They ask the Australian what happened in that Q3 session. "Not really any mistakes, just didn't feel like I really got into a rhythm for the whole session, just struggled," he says. I'll go and have a look why, obviously. Yeah... that was about all."

On whether McLaren have a race pace advtange over Red Bull: "Difficult to say. I think Max has looked quick all weekend, so we'll have to wait and see if that translates to tomorrow as well. Yeah, so obviously we have no idea.

On if he feels any differently about the Turn One collision in the sprint: "I think it is just a racing incident. Lando and I were a long way away from the apex and it's impossible to see everything at that point. So if I had known there were [cars] three-wide behind me, maybe I would've done something a little bit diferent. But yeah, you have to trust your gut and your instinct, and that's what I did.

On if he can he refocus for tomorrow's race: "Yeah, I think so. When you don't have the pace you want, it's definitely not the nicest feeling. But there's a lot of opportunities tomorrow with strategy things, hopefully our race pace will be good and it's a track you can overtake on. We'll see what we can do, but the weekend is far from over."

  5. 22 points between the McLarenspublished at 23:53 BST 18 October

There is just 22 points between the McLaren drivers.

The sprint race would have offered the chance to gain points but unfortunately for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, their race was cut very short after their collision at the start.

Both drivers put the the sprint race incident behind them and got their cars into Q3. Lando Norris will line up with Max Verstappen in the front row but Oscar Piastri could only manage P6.

They will have to keep an eye out for Red Bull's Max Verstappen who is on pole and is proving that he is also in the title fight.

  6. P3 a 'big surprise' - Leclercpublished at 23:48 BST 18 October

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who will start third on the grid in Austin: "It was quite a big surprise [to be P3], considering the weekend has been difficult for us since the beginning.

"We tried to put everything together in qualifying and managed to do so, but I think there are still things we need to understand from this car because there is just too much of a swing in performance in the same weekend without fundamentally changing the car.

"But it's been an interesting sprint this morning. I think we have leared a lot. We applied that in qualifying and it seems to be working. So I hope that from now on we kind of catch back a little bit."

On Sunday's race: "Our car is normally stronger in the race than it is in qualifying, so that's a positive. I don't know if it's strong enough to go and fight with Max and the McLaren, but we'll do everything."

  7. 'It could have been worse' - Norrispublished at 23:43 BST 18 October

McLaren's Lando Norris who qualified P2: "It has been more of a struggle today for whatever reason. Yesterday I was quite comfortable and I don't know if everyone has improved a bit or the wind today hurt us a bit more.

"We [Norris and Oscar Piastri] were both struggling quite a bit more to put the laps in and be as quick as [Max Verstappen]. We were pushing, I'm happy with P2. It could have been worse. There's no chance we could have gone pole today.

On Sunday's race: "Don't get hit is my clue for tomorrow I look forward to having a good race with Max, we've had a good few in the past and I am looking forward to it."

  8. 'Very strong result' for Red Bull - Verstappenpublished at 23:38 BST 18 October

    Max VerstappenImage source, Getty Images

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who secures pole position in Austin: "It was good. I think in every segment, the car was strong - trying to put the lap together around here sometimes can be quite tricky. Also, it's very hot, and a very strong wind as well in that first sector. Having a tailwind is challenging, let's say.

"The first run in Q3 was good; just managed to improve a little bit from Q2. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do my final run - it was a bit messy with the out laps. Luckily, we didn't need it. But again, for us, very stong result.

"The wind picked up today compared to yesterday and it managed to turn a little bit as well, like a full-on tailwind into the essess. With that, you just lose downforce and the car is moving around a lot more. Even compared to yesterday, so that made it a bit harder. At some corners you gain a bit of lap time back, but of course, you can't commit as much as you normally can in sector one.

Right, what an action-packed Saturday at the US Grand Prix, and hopefully, Sunday's race will be no different.

Shall we hear from the top three?

It has not been a good day for McLaren's Oscar Piastri. First he was out of the sprint race and has managed to qualify sixth.

Can he push himself to the top in Sunday's race? Should Max Verstappen win, he will narrow the gap even more to the McLarens at the top of the drivers' standings.

Well this is a swinging moment, really. It was important for Oscar Piastri to get a good lap in and get up there, at least in the top three, but now he's got a bit of a job to do to catch up with the title contenders, who are looking to take points away from him.
