While Hong Kong definitely has no shortage of restaurants serving pasta, so many of them stick to the tried-and-tested formulas instead of playing around with this versatile staple food. Perhaps they’re afraid of offending the Italians or they don’t know how to innovate with such a well-established dish, but either way, the newest pasta joint in town, Twist Pasta Bar, has no such qualms. From the minds behind other fantastic F&B establishments like Bourke’s, Honky Tonks Tavern, Terracotta Lamma, and Mendel’s, Twist is a love letter to pasta, using the noodles as a canvas for flavours, textures, and ideas. Aside from classics like baked rigatoni ($180) with ‘nduja, spicy vodka, and ricotta, their main draw for us is how they’re incorporating Hong Kong flavours into undeniably western dishes. The squid ink spaghetti ($170) is topped with dried shrimp roe from Yau Kee, and the Hong Kong twists carry into desserts as well, such as with the white chocolate and soy milk panna cotta ($80), a nod to Kung Wo Beancurd Factory’s tofu pudding. Don’t ignore the drinks menu, as their cocktails are also culinary-driven with interesting flavour profiles. For instance, the truffle sour contains black truffle gin and Oloroso sherry, while the caprese martini is a savoury slant to the classic drink, served with a mozzarella sidecar. After a seven-year wait, the MAMA Awards is finally returning to Hong Kong this November! This year’s venue host, Kai Tak Stadium, has just announced that priority tickets will go live this Friday, with general tickets going on sale shortly after.  Mnet announced the nominees for each category of the awards at yesterday on Thursday, October 16, and K-pop fans worldwide were excited to see some of the biggest names in the genre appear on voting forms, including Seventeen, Stray Kids, Le Sserafim, IU, aespa, Blackpink, and BTS. You know what this means – there’s a chance we’ll get to see all of them in person right in Hong Kong! Tickets to the 2025 MAMA Awards are priced at $1,299, $1,699, or $2,599 for partially restricted views, and from $899 to $2,599 for seated entry. All $2,599 ticket holders can also access an exclusive entrance to the venue.  The Visa Infinite Presale runs from 10am to 2pm on Friday, October 17, and the Visa Presale from 6pm on the same day to 2pm on Saturday, October 18, exclusively on Cityline. This hot and typhoon-heavy summer is finally, blessedly, coming to an end. The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) forecasts a significant drop in temperatures from next Monday, October 20, that will likely persist until Friday. Northeastern winds are due to strengthen gradually over the weekend, bringing with it welcome autumnal weather.  It will still be relatively hot for the rest of this week, with the mercury likely reaching a high of 28 degrees Celsius on Saturday, October 18, but starting to dip into the low 20s come next Monday and Tuesday. This welcomed cool spell is the combined effect of an intense northeast monsoon and a low pressure system developing over the east Philippines Sea. Set to reach their peak intensity at the northeastern part of the South China Sea over the weekend, expect moderate wind speeds and a few showers to arrive alongside a fall in temperature starting next Wednesday, October 22. At the time of publication, the HKO predicts temperatures will fall to 21 degrees Celsius next Wednesday and Thursday. In the meantime, expect continuous fine and hot weather until this Friday as an anticyclone makes its way across Guangdong. Carb is life, and if you take that mantra seriously, you’ll want to bookmark this one – Kowloon Shangri-La is bringing back its highly acclaimed, oft sold-out ‘Japanese Artisanal Bread Breakfast Buffet’ this autumn (now try saying that three times quick).  Head to the Lobby Lounge at Kowloon Shangri-La to nosh on this creative themed buffet that holds the key to all of our hearts (and stomachs). An expansive spread of exquisite Japanese pastries and breads will be presented for diners to graze from, featuring 20 different kinds of artisan baked goods that run the gamut from savoury to sweet. What’s there to try? New items to the bread breakfast buffet include the shaved truffle egg salad doughnuts, crafted using red wheat flour, Lan Wang eggs, and rich Hokkaido cream, and stuffed with a Japanese egg salad filling following a Tanman recipe; and the chestnut Mont Blanc danish, consisting of a Japanese chestnut paste and Madagascan vanilla custard. Mini ‘nama’ cream doughnuts are also making their debut appearance – these sweet treats are famous for their soft, pillowy brioche exterior and custard interior, and they are really having their moment in the spotlight right now. Kowloon Shangri-La will make theirs using red wheat flour from a 140-year-old heritage mill in Japan, praised for lending superior elasticity to the dough after being worked. We’re personally most excited for a bite of the sea salt butter red bean bread. Also known as a shio croissant – for the uninitiated, this is a masterful pastry boasting a crisp outer shell and a fluffy, velvety interior – this delicious morsel perfectly balances savoury and sweet, thanks to a dusting of salt flakes and a filling of butter and red bean. It’s back! Hong Kong’s top sporting event, the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, will make its return, and the dates have been set for April 17 to 19, 2026. Next year’s tournament marks the second time that the Hong Kong Sevens will be held at the Kai Tak Stadium, so we’re looking forward to some world-class action, top-tier talent on display, and non-stop entertainment. 30 teams are expected to participate, including 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams across the HSBC SVNS World Championship, and an additional three men’s and three women’s teams who will play in the Melrose Claymores invitational tournament. Argentina, Australia, Canada, Fiji, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, and the US will be represented, alongside a number of additional qualifying teams. World Rugby is doing things differently in 2026 by introducing a new event format that breaks the World Championship into three rounds, each held in a different city. Under the revamped event model, the first six tournaments in the annual schedule will act as regular tournaments, while the last three events will form the HSBC SVNS World Championship, of which Hong Kong is the first leg of the championship series. It means that the HSBC SVNS Series will be played in Dubai, Cape Town, Singapore, Vancouver, Australia, and the US as normal tournaments, and the tournaments held in Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux will constitute the three-event SVNS World Championship. How teams perform in the SVNS World Championship 2026 will decide the line-up for the following year. Jazz music lovers in Hong Kong are in for a real treat this October: the legendary Grammy-nominated trumpeter Jon Faddis is set to take the stage by storm on October 29 and 30 for four shows only! Performing at the at Xiqu Centre’s Tea House Theatre, the celebrated musician – who credits renowned jazz pioneer Dizzy Gillespie as his mentor – will be joined by Andrew Latona on guitar, Christopher Latona on drums, and Mikey Migliore on bass to form the Jon Faddis Quartet for two nights in town. As one of the leading jazz trumpeters of our time, Jon Faddis has mesmerised audiences with his sensational virtuosity and innovative musical style for more than 40 years. Faddis effortlessly blends masterful technique with extensive range, powerful high notes, and soft low notes, showcasing phenomenal skill, complexity, and artistic flair. He’s also served a stint as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra’s guest conductor and featured guest, and made an appearance on the silver screen in the Blues Brothers 2000 action-comedy as a trumpeter in the film’s fictional jazz supergroup, the Louisiana Gator Boys. Most notably, Faddis is known for composing Lulu Noire, an acclaimed jazz opera, and the release of his Grammy-nominated album, Remembrances, in 1999. M+, Asia’s leading contemporary visual culture museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District, is sending audiences on a blast to the past with its Autumn Edition 2025, taking place from October to December, and the programme is filled to the brim with special exhibitions, showcases, and tributes to Hong Kong’s rich cinematic legacy. Kicking things off is M+ Restored, an initiative dedicated to preserving Hong Kong cinema history through the restoration of nine feature films. First up are The Arch (1968), The System (1979), and Love Massacre (1981), a trio of films that represent the creative spirit of the Hong Kong New Wave movement that reshaped our cinematic language and style. Photograph: Courtesy M+, Hong Kong For audiences that would like to dive deeper into the complex processes of film preservation and digital restoration, the ‘Behind the Restoration Talks’ series brings restoration specialists, former film festival directors, cinematographers, and M+ curators together to discuss the creative efforts behind the M+ Restored films. You can also get hands-on with the ‘What is Film, Anyway?’ interactive workshop to explore analogue film formats, including professional 35-mm and amateur eight-mm films. ‘Rediscoveries—Chinese Diaspora in Hollywood’ celebrates the significant cinematic contributions of the Chinese diaspora and the considerable challenges they had to overcome within the American film industry. Films such as Daughter of Shanghai (1937) starring Anna May Wong, Flower Drum Song (1961) starring Nancy Kwan and an all-Asian cast, Bruce Lee’s iconic Enter the Dragon (1973), and many more will be screened. Photograph: Courtesy Fortune Star Media Limited Since spooky season’s coming up, M+ Cinema has also prepared two special screenings to celebrate the occasion. ‘Every Bruce Was Kung Fu Fighting’ centres on ‘Bruceploitation’ – the low-budget, imitation genre that sprung up as the immediate aftermath of Bruce Lee’s untimely passing – and the programme features two grindhouse classics and one documentary that audiences can sink their teeth into: The Dragon Lives Again (1977), The Clones of Bruce Lee (1980), and Enter the Clones of Bruce (2023). M+ Cinema is also bringing the 4K restored versions of Ju-On and Ju-On 2 (2000) to the big screen for anyone keen to revisit the horror classic in time for Halloween. In the latest edition of “I didn’t know Chinese diaspora and Hong Kong filmmakers were involved in that,” ‘Fresh Eyes’ will showcase two animated films: Bambi (1942), which was brought to life through concept art created by the late Chinese-American artist Tyrus Wong – who served as the lead production illustrator on the film – and Shrek (2001), the animation of which was supervised by Hong Kong-born animator Raman Hui. Photograph: Courtesy Park Circus / Walt Disney Studios A seemingly endless list of programmes round out the Autumn Edition 2025, including a new ‘Art at the Stair’ moving exhibition featuring six non-narrative documentaries, and the Hong Kong debut of Escape (2025) by Masao Adachi. ‘Stair in the Dark—Big Leap Forward’ focuses on filmmakers whose bold choices have led their masterpieces to critical acclaim; Drive (2011), Good Time (2017), and Irma Vep (1996) will be screened. ‘Dream Rooms: Women Artists on Film’ – part of the Dream Rooms: Environments by Women Artists 1950s–Now special exhibition – will showcase films and documentaries centred around Judy Chicago, Lygia Clark, Marta Minujín, and Niki de Saint Phalle.  Meanwhile, ‘Avant-Garde Now: Here From Afar’ will gather multidisciplinary artists Eric Baudelaire, Lap-See Lam, Noh Suntag, and Trương Minh Quý to showcase moving image works that delve into the topics of borders, migration, and home. While the majority of Hong Kong’s nightlife centres around Central’s LKF and Tsim Sha Tsui’s Knutsford Terrace, there is a relatively underground scene that’s been serving local youths for decades. These nightclubs are popular among Hong Kong’s younger generations for their affordable entertainment and a focus on indie music. Slap is one such staple in Mong Kok’s nightlife scene and a venue attached with fond memories for many local youths.  The owners of Slap announced the club’s closure through a social media post on October 5, citing various reasons for their decision, including poor building maintenance, difficulties with food and drink permits, as well as continued operational issues since the club flooded in August 2025.  The news came as a surprise to dwellers of Hong Kong’s underground scene, and a shock to the growing community that Slap has managed to amass over its eight-month operation. On October 25, Slap will host one final party at its Mong Kok location, with the lineup yet to be announced and tickets on sale now.  Slap’s closure will mark the third underground venue to close in Hong Kong since 2020. This dwindling number could represent a public disinterest in alternative and indie forms of entertainment, but the encouraging crowds that have been drawn to Slap by its closing announcement is hard to ignore. There is a clear demand for underground clubs like Slap in this city, and fans should remain hopeful for new – and perhaps – returning venues in the future. One of Hong Kong’s most dynamic dive bars is celebrating its tin anniversary! No introductions are needed for the one and only Pontiac, which will be happily ringing in a decade doing what it does best: slinging craft cocktails and making it look cool. A lineup of new cocktails will be released under the ‘Talking Walls’ anniversary menu, which pays tribute to the meaningful messages, creative graffiti, and late-night musings that guests have scrawled onto The Pontiac’s walls over the last 10 years. Jen Queen, general manager and Mezcalier of The Pontiac, says, “We view all the nights we’ve ever had in this bar as a collaboration between the bar team and our guests, and these etched messages are the physical representation of the last 10 years of our history. For this landmark menu, we wanted to commemorate and celebrate them and give them back to our guests as a thank you for being a part of us for the last decade.” Photograph: Courtesy The Pontiac A highlight drink on the menu is the First & Last ($98), a tequila-based cocktail made with Ribena and hibiscus syrup and fenugreek tincture to create a sweet and savoury experience. Inspiration struck when Queen’s team found a quote on the wall in a corner of the bar – “the first & last girl i’ll ever be with” – which led to the creation of the drink. I Post My Crimes for Likes ($88), with gin, rum, strawberry-oolong cordial, lemon, and Aér, and One Day My Sex Tape Will Matter ($118), made with cognac, rum, salted lemon cordial, and lime-leaf curaçao liqueur, are complex blends inspired by anonymous tags. As a throwback, The Pontiac’s signature cocktail, The Hobnail, will benefit from a temporary price adjustment to $88 – how much the drink cost when it first launched – till the end of 2025.  With a distinctive no-nonsense attitude, larger-than-life personalities behind the bar, and unapologetically rowdy energy, The Pontiac was a breath of fresh air when it opened in 2015 and has drawn crowds to its Old Bailey Street haunt time and again. Beckaly Franks, the award-winning bartender who co-founded The Pontiac a decade ago, stepped back from the project in 2024, but her vision and impact have left an indelible mark, infusing the well-loved watering hole with its trademark rock n’ roll liveliness.  As The Pontiac enters a new era, the spirit of community, empowerment, collaboration, and inclusivity remains strong. In case you missed it, the Joyful Miniature Association (JMA) is back once again, this time with more incredibly detailed dioramas of life in Hong Kong, including seven brand-new miniatures that have never been seen before. The 24 art pieces will highlight some of Hong Kong’s famous landmarks, cultural customs, and unique lifestyles.
