Eurostar travel warning ahead of new system rollout
EU entry-exit system: Simon Calder trials the procedure at London St Pancras International
Eurostar passengers travelling to the Schengen area from 12 October will face new entry requirements enforced by French border police at London St Pancras.
These requirements, part of the new EU Entry-Exit System (EES), include proof of medical insurance, pre-booked accommodation, a return ticket, and sufficient funds.
The demand for medical insurance is a specific French control for "third-country nationals" and goes beyond the standard Schengen area entry rules.
Travellers will be asked these questions at automatic kiosks during biometric registration, and a negative answer could result in refusal of entry.
This rule applies to all Eurostar destinations, including Belgium and the Netherlands, despite those countries not having a medical insurance requirement for entry.
