Off-duty Riverside County sheriff's lieutenant killed in Idaho hunting accident

An off-duty Riverside County Sheriff's Department lieutenant was shot and killed during a hunting accident in Idaho last weekend, department officials said on Thursday.

Nathan Kaas, 48, was in southern Idaho when he was killed on Oct. 12, according to a social media post from the Riverside Sheriffs' Association. They did not provide details on the incident, but the San Bernardino Sun reported that he was struck by gunfire from an accidental discharge as he and his partner prepared to hunt mule deer in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

"Lieutenant Kaas was a devoted husband, father, and servant leader whose faith and love for his family, community, and the Sheriff's Office left a lasting impact on all who knew him," said the RSA's statement.

Kaas joined RSO in 2000, climbing the ranks from a deputy to investigator, sergeant and lieutenant. He was most recently assigned to the Sheriff's Emergency Response Team, the social media post said.

He was a husband and father of three, according to the RSA.

"His relationship, love and service to Jesus Christ, his church and community, emboldened his impact on the many walks of life he encountered. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and loyal friend," the post said.
