How Google enforces the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy

Generative AI models can help you explore, learn, and create. We expect you to engage with them in a responsible, legal, and safe manner. However, some restrictions apply to your interactions with generative AI in Google products and services. These restrictions are set out in the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy.

How Google identifies potential violations of the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy

Our systems detect activity and behavior that suggest misuse of our GenAI products, for example:

  • Attempting to generate content to engage in dangerous or illegal activities, or otherwise violate applicable law or regulations.
  • Compromising the security of Google’s services, including attempts to circumvent safety protections (e.g. prompt injections).
  • Attempting to generate content that violates privacy, including using someone’s image without their consent and non-consensual intimate imagery.
  • Using generated content to engage in frauds, scams or other deceptive actions.
  • Attempting to generate of content related to child sexual abuse or exploitation.

When Prohibited Use Policy violations are confirmed

If we confirm that you have violated the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy or our other specific Terms of Service, you will receive notifications in-product and/or via email. Repeated violations of the Prohibited Use Policy may lead to restrictions to your Generative AI product usage and/or your Google account.

Appeal Process

If your account was restricted for violating the Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy, and you feel this may have been in error, you can appeal the restriction by submitting an appeal using the link from the restriction notice or email.
