    Change Websites settings in Safari on Mac

    In the Safari app on your Mac, use Websites settings to customize how you browse individual websites.

    To change these settings, choose Safari > Settings, then click Websites.

    The settings you can customize (such as Reader and Content Blockers) are listed on the left.

    To apply a setting to a website, first select the setting, then choose the option you want from the pop-menu next to the website.

    Option

    Description

    Reader

    • On: Automatically use Safari Reader to display articles on the site without distractions.

    • Off: Don’t use Reader by default on the site. (You can still choose to use Reader for individual articles on the site.)

    Content Blockers

    • On: Stop ads and other unwanted content from appearing on the site.

    • Off: Don’t block ads and other unwanted content on the site.

    Auto-Play

    • Allow All Auto-Play: All videos on the site can autoplay.

    • Stop Media with Sound: Only videos that don’t have audio can autoplay.

    • Never Auto-Play: No videos can autoplay.

    Page Zoom

    Choose a percentage of zoom to make text and images on the site easier to see.

    Camera

    • Ask: The site must ask if it can use the camera on your Mac.

    • Deny: The site can’t use your camera.

    • Allow: The site can always use your camera.

    Microphone

    • Ask: The site must ask if it can use the microphone on your Mac.

    • Deny: The site can’t use your microphone.

    • Allow: The site can always use your microphone.

    Screen Sharing

    • Ask: Users of other computers must ask to remotely view your screen.

    • Deny: Users of other computers are prevented from remotely viewing your screen.

    Location

    • Ask: The site must ask if it can use your location.

    • Deny: The site can’t use your location.

    • Allow: The site can always use your location.

    Downloads

    • Ask: You’re asked before a download can start while visiting the site.

    • Deny: Downloads are prevented while you’re visiting the site.

    • Allow: Downloads are always permitted while you’re visiting the site.

    Notifications

    • Allow: The site can send you notifications.

    • Deny: The site can’t send you notifications.

    • Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications: When you visit a website that wants to send you notifications, you see a dialog asking if you want to receive them. To stop seeing the dialog, deselect this option.

    Pop-up Windows

    Block pop-up windows that appear when you visit a website.

    • Block and Notify: When you visit the site, Safari displays an icon in the Smart Search field. You can click the icon to display the pop-up windows.

    • Block: The site can’t display pop-up windows.

    • Allow: The site can display pop-up windows.

    Note: Some websites use pop-up windows for essential content.

    Lockdown Mode

    • On: Extreme, optional protection is turned on for the site.

    • Off: No additional protection is turned on for the site.

    Important: Lockdown Mode is designed for the very few individuals who, because of who they are or what they do, might be personally targeted by some of the most sophisticated digital threats. Most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature. When in Lockdown Mode, your Mac won’t function as it typically does, and some features are unavailable.

    Currently Open Websites

    Websites that are open in a window or tab in Safari. You might have previously chosen an option from the pop-up menu for some of these websites.

    Configured Websites

    The list of websites you’ve customized. If you don’t see Configured Websites, either you haven’t customized a website yet, or you’ve cleared the list.

    Remove

    Remove the selected website from the list of configured websites.

    When visiting other websites

    Choose an option from this pop-up menu to apply it to any website that you haven’t already chosen a setting for.

    To apply a setting to all websites, make sure no websites are listed below Configured Websites (to clear the list quickly, select the websites, then click Remove). Then click this pop-up menu and choose the option you want.

    Share across devices

    Use the settings you chose for a website on all Apple devices where you’re signed in to the same Apple Account, have iCloud set up for Safari, and have two-factor authentication turned on.

    Page Zoom settings are shared only with another Mac or an iPad.

    Important: Privacy-sensitive settings, such as Camera and Microphone, aren’t shared across Apple devices.
